>> Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Looking after your finances can be a daunting experience. Sometimes you can find yourself out of pocket and desperately looking for more cash. So when something comes along that seems sort your money troubles out it can be easy to start relying on it.

To many, a credit card can seem like a magic wand that wipes out all their money problems. It allows them borrow money that they don’t actually have and still spend more. They even get a good amount of time to pay the money back.
However, when you start to fall behind with these payments, you can soon find your finances in a worse mess than before. But there are ways that you can prevent yourself from slipping into this financial nightmare.

Why use a credit card?

While some people find it difficult not to overspend with a credit card, the card itself is not a liability. A credit card simply allows the user to purchase goods with a promise that they will repay the creditor within a defined time frame.

Credit cards can in fact be a very convenient way to buy your goods. If you buy goods with a credit card it means that you don’t have to carry lots of money around with you. This means that you don’t have to make regular and time wasting stops to cash machines. Moreover, if your cash physically gets stolen you can’t get it back, however, if your card gets stolen you can call your bank to cancel the card and they normally won’t charge you for any transactions made by the thief, you will also be issued with a new card.
Using a credit card wisely also helps to build up a credit line, which improves you credit rating. A good credit rating is important for when you want to make a large purchase such as taking out a big loan like a mortgage.

Depending on which type of card you use, you can also get certain rewards by purchasing things with your credit card. You may get discounts from some shops, free air miles or travel vouchers and special insurances on purchases.

Falling into debt

When you start missing repayments on your credit card, your debts can start to rack up at an alarming rate. Although you are normally given 60 days interest free credit, once you go beyond this point, interest rates go through the roof. Not only will this start to put you in debt, it is likely to damage your credit rating too.
Although credit card companies encourage you to overspend, there is very little support from them when you do so, and they are ruthless when it comes to collecting what’s owed to them. But there are ways you can keep on top of your credit card use.

Using a credit card wisely

Just because it is possible to fall into debt using a credit card, it doesn’t mean you have to. There are simple ways that you can make sure you’re using your credit card wisely and staying on top of your repayments.
It is vital to start making minimum repayments before this time. You should also make a monthly budget and stick to it. Although a credit card allows you to spend beyond your means for a while, if you abuse it, you will end up with financial difficulties. It is also very important to keep track of all your purchases to ensure you aren’t a victim of credit card fraud.
