Preparing for your future - take control of your finances
>> Sunday, December 16, 2012
If you want to prepare for your future properly then the key is to take
control where you can.
It is impossible to say exactly what will happen
to you in the coming years, so do not assume that any amount of preparation
will cover you completely; however, there are options available for those who
want to protect themselves from some of the risks that commonly affect people.
While money cannot buy you everything, it does
allow you to navigate away from life's obstacles and towards your objectives,
but it is not necessary to become a millionaire to feel more at ease about your
future - it may just involve a few smart decisions.
Saving
Arguably the simplest way to give yourself a
financial cushion is to get into the habit of saving regularly. Even if it is
only a small proportion of your wage it can really help to start putting money
aside from an early age, so that you get into the habit of building up savings
gradually. As you begin earning more you can increase the quantity that gets
put into a separate savings account.
If you find it difficult to find any spare cash
to put aside, then try treating a standing order from your current account as
another bill - like your utility bill - that is unavoidable. No matter how much
money you earn you will generally spend all of it, so just amend your lifestyle
a little so that you can save at least some cash every month. This will build a
financial cushion over time.
Later years
As you get older you may want to look into
structured products that will help you to deal with costs over a longer period
of time; for example, dental or medical insurance can allow you to pay a fixed
amount each month, while online life insurance could
help you to build up a lump sum that can go to your family when you pass away.
You will also want to prepare for your own future
by aiming to pay off your mortgage by the time you reach the end of your
working life - and subsequently have a reasonable income with which to live
comfortably in retirement. The key is to be aware of your financial situation
early on in life, so that you do not need to play catch-up on pension
contributions or mortgage repayments later.
Children
Everyone wants to look after their children's
future as well as their own, it is a natural parental want. While some mothers
and fathers might aim to leave the family home as inheritance, arguably the
greatest financial legacy you can leave your offspring is to make sure they are
good with money.
Of course, it is great to be able to leave them
a lump sum via a life insurance pot or savings, but under all this there needs
to be a fundamental understanding of the value of money. They need not squirrel
away all their cash - some could be good with money in an entrepreneurial sense
- but they do need to know their way around the financial system.
