7 Simple Money-Saving Tips for Summer and Beyond

Whether you’re part of a family, couple or a single, enjoying life on a budget is likely to be an important issue in your life. In these trying economic times, it’s common to forego extras, entertainment and vacations to pay the bills. But those who are frugally-minded and budget-savvy can always find ways to make ends meet while still enjoying life. Use these seven simple money-saving tips so you can take care of the necessities and enjoy a little fun this summertime and throughout the year.
- Lawn & Property Care on a Budget. Maintenance of your yard and driveway help to keep up the value of your property. Having your driveway resurfaced each summer or your lawn professionally fertilized and aerated may be low on the priority list due to cost, but it doesn’t have to be. Many small companies give discounts if you and your neighbors schedule service together.
- Cut Your Grocery Bill. Big name grocery stores sell most of their items with big prices. Save money by shopping no-frills grocery stores, instead. Purchase store brands and use coupons on any store brand items you buy.
- Saving Money on Non-Grocery Purchases. Between outlet stores and online discount shopping sites, there’s no reason to pay the regular retail price on appliances, clothing or furniture. Use the internet to search for local outlet stores where discontinued items are sold, or buy from an online discount site.
- Brown Bag It. A busy schedule often results in adults eating out or ordering takeout while at work and kids going through the hot lunch line at school. These options can add up to be a huge money drain each week. Instead, make lunches the night before to slash costs on midday meals by approximately 75 percent.
- Entertainment on a Budget. After a long week at work, it’s natural to want to have a little fun. Dinner and a movie out might not be an option, but you can still enjoy a nice evening of entertainment. Many pizza franchises offer special prices and coupons to cut the cost of a pizza below $10. Pick up a movie rental at your local big box store where movie rental machines are often standing inside the front doors. For a dollar or two, you can enjoy one of the latest releases.
- Fun for the Kids. Participating in clubs, sports and other extra-curricular activities is both fun and beneficial for children. Instead of paying the high prices demanded by private companies, take advantage of classes offered by your local park district.
- The 24-Hour Delay Technique. Impulse buying can really put a dent in the budget. At one point or another, everyone sees something they want and buys it without thinking twice. If you really want and need it, you’ll still feel the same way in 24 hours. Wait one day so you have time to think about it. Chances are that, within that 24-hour period, you’ll decide you don’t really need it after all.
Many people feel pressured to build up a savings but are unable to do so due to tight finances. The money-saving tips above can help you meet your financial obligations in a way that leaves you with a bit extra to set aside. The way in which you choose to spend the money you’ve saved is up to you; but learning that you have the ability to save is certain to empower you to do it more.
