Technique For Paying Out Credit Card Simply
>> Thursday, November 17, 2011
You want to get rid of those looming credit cards and loan debts, but despite all your best efforts, all you ever end up doing is paying the minimum amount. As history has probably told you, this doesn’t really work. It’s not your efforts that are failing, you are just not organized enough. Even though it is about a century old, the 20% payment technique has been prized for working for many individuals. You may have to restructure your debts, or even your life, but this technique has been proven to work.First up, evaluate your debt. Add up all your credit cards, every loan, any personal money borrowing from friends or family and anything else. Write down your total monthly payments, too. Also, if there is an interest rate attached to the debt, write that down as well, it will be useful later.
Next, write down the total amount of money you get per month, after taxes. You now have to segment your income. According to this formula, 10% is for saving, 20% is for debts and the remaining 70% can be used for anything else. That means, if you make $3,000 a month, then $300 goes to savings, $600 to debts and $2,100 for anything else. The number you really want to inspect is that 20%.
This isn’t only for your income, it is for every dollar that hits your palm. Did you get cash for your birthday? Take the 20% and 10% out before using the rest for fun. What about finding money on the street? Same thing. No matter how you get money, it must always be fractioned like this to ensure this plan works.
Compare it to your debt amount. Is your 20% greater than your monthly debt payments? If so, great, you are on your way to making your debt shrink in no time. However, if the 20% isn’t enough, then you have a problem. Don’t start changing the figures to make up for the loss, like reducing the 70% to 60% so you have more money for debts. Doing that is just going to get you caught in debt again. This is a long-term strategy, and you need conviction for this to work.

If the 20% isn’t enough, then first try to restructure your debts. Is there anyway you can make the monthly payments lower? If so, drop them until your 20% is enough. If not, then you have to change your lifestyle. Try spending less money to help balance out the debt, or get another job or work more hours for better income.
Now that the numbers are making sense, the next thing to do is paying off the debt, but how should this be done? Should you just throw the money, in equal portions, to all of your credits cards? Or should you start paying off the debt with the largest balance?

Both can work well, the latter being the better of the two, but neither are appropriate. For the 20% method to work, you want to start by paying the minimum amounts on all your debts. Any money left over should be pushed towards your debt with the highest interest rate. Even if the balance is lower than other debts, failing to pay off high-interest debts means your debt is going to grow at an expanded rate.
What if you can never get your debt low enough to satisfy the 20% rule? If this is an impossible goal, then you may have to declare bankruptcy. Or, if you are paying for a house and you just can’t keep up, it may be good to sell the house and get a smaller, more affordable house or apartment.
Debt is an issue that nearly every American struggles with, but this plan has worked for many. Now that you are armed with knowledge, put this into practice and see how effective it is.
