Things to consider before procuring travel insurance

Travel insurance is an essential when jetting off anywhere in the world, but there are a few things you should consider before buying it. 

Firstly, you need to check what exactly the policy will cover should you fall ill. For example, will it only offer £1,000 cover; or will it only cover conditions you haven't had previously? If you require travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions, then you will need to investigate specialist policies. 

Secondly, check what the terms of the insurance are for last-minute cancellations. We can plan all we want, but ultimately, life can get in the way sometimes. People are forced to cancel trips for all sorts of reasons, such as a bereavement in the family, or if political unrest breaks out in your destination of choice. 

However it's important to feel secure in the knowledge that your insurer will cover the costs. Also, be sure to check if it covers airline failure or natural disasters; as these can occur more frequently than you'd think. 

Thirdly, is it going to cover your baggage and its contents, should it go missing? Even if it's stolen whilst you're on holiday, you should ensure you won't be liable for the damage; otherwise you could end up with no clothes, camera or even money, and end up shelling out hundreds or thousands to replace the missing items. 

What sort of excess is going to apply should you have to claim? It is vital you check this, as if you have to pay a £900 excess on a £1000 claim, there's hardly much point in pursuing it. Excesses are hard to avoid, but by doing your homework, you can make sure you pay a reasonable sum. 

Lastly, make sure you read all of the small print - right down to the last letter. Not reading it could mean the difference between a simple, hassle-free claim, and being out thousands of your hard-earned pounds.
