Learn how to find a loan

>> Monday, December 17, 2012

Getting the first loan can be quite intimidating. When you have no credit history, most lenders will be reluctant to deal with you; on the other hand, you have to start somewhere, in order to build your credit history.
There are few solutions, and most of them involve accepting expensive bad credit loans, or using some form of collateral, if you own any assets that can be used as collateral.

Do Your Homework

The first thing you have to do is research all your options – and be prepared to invest a good amount of time in this. It's very important to make up your mind, and to know exactly what you want – and what you can realistically obtain – before you contact the lender. If you're not very sure, the lenders will always try to sell you a more expensive product. After all, they have a business to run, and it's in their best interest to give you something that will tie you to their company for as long as possible.

Comparing different types of loans can be confusing, so try to limit yourself to the loans in the same category – for instance, if you need an auto loan, check those first, and only if you find out you cannot qualify for any, then check personal loans as well.

Prepare Your Case

Remember that the credit score and the lending history are not the only factors that influence the lender's decision to approve or reject your application. Make sure you have a sound repayment plan, and explain it to the lender. Use your employment history as well, and mention any future developments in your career that might help you earn more, and therefore improve your overall financial situation.

Avoid taking a lot of loans early, when you don't qualify for the best offers. Build your score slowly, and you will save a lot of money later on. Also, do not max out the credit limit, even if the lenders are willing to give you more than you need. Too much debt when you're just starting out is a huge burden, and you may end up paying for the rest of your life, so weigh your decisions carefully.

If you find things too confusing, you can always go for help to an accountant or a consultant, so don't hesitate to ask for advice, instead of trying to do everything by yourself. There are people who specialize in analyzing the best loan options, and they can surely provide you with useful tips and hints.

There are no universal best loans – it all depends on your particular situation, and your current needs and income, so do not take a loan just because a friend or a friend told you it was a good idea. What works for one person may be a disaster for another, so you have to learn and adjust as you learn, until you are able to administer your financial situation effectively. Financial discipline is a matter of education, but once you manage to develop a habit, you will find things a lot easier than you'd expect in the beginning.
