How Would You Feel About Being Rewarded For Spending Money On Your Credit Card?

>> Wednesday, November 27, 2013

One of the most competitive industries must be the credit card market. In fact, most credit card companies do all they can to bring in new customers and new business, and this is typically seen in the form of better terms and better rates. However, something that has become extremely popular in recent years is the rewards credit card. This is where a consumer is rewarded by earning points towards something they desire every time they spend money on their credit card. The points earning system may go towards airline miles, hotel stays, or gift card vouchers, thus saving you money on any of these types of purchases in the future.

You may also be able to earn cash-back rewards via your credit card, and this seems to be the most popular amongst consumers. Basically, from the points you have earned from spending with your credit card, you have the ability to redeem these points for actual cash. This money can then be used as and how you wish, such as payment towards your taxes, into a savings account, to pay a bill, or simply to spend on yourself. This post investigates some of the rewards on offer from credit card companies and banks.

Gift Cards

Gift cards are proving to be extremely popular amongst credit card providers as a way to deliver rewards to their customers. They can typically be used at specific stores and are very convenient for the customer to use. You may even be offered discounts, such as 10% or 20%, on certain merchandise, as long as you have a gift card. This is fantastic news if your credit card provider allocates gift cards for a store you use on a regular basis, and it’s likely to save you a fair amount of money in the long run.

Loyalty Points

Banks typically want close working relationships with their customers and therefore they may reward customer loyalty in the form of “loyaltypoints”. The main objective in doing this is to encourage customers to use a wider range of banking products. Therefore, you may earn loyalty points for paying your bills via Internet banking, or taking out a new loan, or switching to paperless statements, etc. These loyalty points can be repaid to customers in a number of ways, such as allowing you to have a lower interest rate on a loan, or a free overdraft, or even cash back rewards in some cases.

Retirement Savings

There are certain credit card providers which provide rewards points for use towards your retirement savings. Therefore, you have the opportunity to deposit these reward points into a number of retirement savings accounts, such as 529 accounts or IRAs. With that being said, there are typically restrictions on this type of reward program, and you may find that you have to spend a certain amount of money before any reward points are paid, as the banks don’t simply want people to abuse the privilege of rewards points. Therefore, it is advisable to read the terms and conditions carefully of such an offer, thus allowing you to determine how useful this type of reward would be to you.
