Is a job in finance right for me?

A career in the finance industry hardly ranks with jobs like fireman, singer or professional sports star when it comes to dream childhood jobs.

However, thousands of Brits are able to make an enjoyable living and earn a lot of money by developing the skills needed to bag a top role in finance.  

Even in the current economic climate, there are dozens of different roles available in finance which could be attractive. Clerk, cashier, underwriter jobs are all in reach for those with the right qualifications relatively soon into a career.


Ultimately, the main of people in these positions is to work their way up to an executive position where they are likely to earn hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.

Number Crunching

It might appear fairly obvious to point out that anyone hoping to excel in the finance industry has to be good at mathematics. After all, most employers won't consider employees that don't have at least a decent GCSE in maths. However, many professionals would agree that you should enjoy working with numbers as well because the job revolves so heavily around equations.  

Attention To Detail

A career in finance often requires brilliant organisational skills and keen attention to detail. Many roles do carry a large workload hence why they are so well paid - so it takes an individual with the physical and mental stamina to complete a variety of tasks without making errors.

Communication

A large part of most finance jobs involves communicating either with customers or fellow staff members. In order to succeed, candidates should enjoy speaking with customers and be able to get their ideas across clearly and effectively. This is particularly important in high-end finance jobs, where most workers are expected to offer useful financial advice to customers, clients or staff below them. 

For this reason, most finance workers need to be able to build great rapport with customers in order to earn their trust and respect. Marketing and sales skills often come in handy as well in situations where employees need to explain the strength of their business and its products to customers.

Office Skills

Finance roles are largely based in office environments. As such, candidates should enjoy working in this kind of environment and be completely literate with popular software such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. They should also enjoy working as part of a team.

Those with the skills described above could well be the perfect candidate to enjoy the fascinating world of a finance career. These jobs are always very much in demand so it is definitely worth brushing up on any of the skills described.
