3 Financial Tips for Young Adults

>> Thursday, February 3, 2011

Getting out on your own for the first time gives you a great feeling of freedom. Maybe you’re off at college, or maybe you’ve simply moved out of your parents’ house and have a great job to support yourself. Whatever the case may be, your newfound freedom can have negative consequences if you are not careful with your money. If you’ve never had to manage your own finances before, you could end up in financial trouble if you are not smart and prepared for what lies ahead. If you’re beginning to manage your money for the first time, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1) Practice Self-control

When you are finally out on your own, it can be hard to get that first pay check and not immediately run out to buy a new video game system with it. If you spend your money as soon as you get it, you won’t have money for the things you need to pay for later on, like rent, food, gas, and more. It pays to hold back and understand your financial situation before you go out and spend large amounts of money on new things. Hold back, be patient, and take care of your needs first. Then you’ll be able to enjoy the money you have without any stress about your bills.

2) Track Your Money

Not only are you bringing in money, but you’ll need to spend money as well. Housing, food, and car insurance, aren’t free, but it is worth it to track all your other expenses as well. At the beginning of the month, make a list of your upcoming expenses and make sure you set aside money to pay for the necessities first. Throughout the month, make sure you are tracking all your expenses. Then, at the end of the month, you can look back and see where your money went. You may be surprised that you spend so much money eating out 3 times a week, and that that money could better go to repairing your car or buying something you really want. Set goals and budgets and stick to them to reach your financial goals.

3) Save (NOW!)

It can be easy to look at your paychecks and think that the money will always be there, that you can get more money next month, but that may not always be the case. If you start a habit of saving now, you’ll be better off in the long run when an emergency occurs. Keep in mind, the earlier you begin to save for retirement, the more money you will have later on—and you’ll be able to retire sooner.

If you can have the discipline to reign in your spending and exert some self-control, enabling you to track your spending and save money, you could be on a great path to early financial independence. Good luck.
