An investment banking analyst is responsible for undertaking research to provide investment information and ideas to fund managers. They make recommendations for investments based on their analytical review of current economic conditions and financial reports. The analysts perform an extensive research on potential investments and present their findings in a report. However, the main responsibility involves analysing possible mergers and acquisitions, conducting valuation analysis and completing the comparable transaction analysis.

Different types of investment banking analysts:

Buy side analysts-

They are liable for providing investment guidance to large scale financial organisations or institutions that have a huge amount of capital to invest.

Sell side analysts-

They work with financial agents who focus on the stock market.

Risk analysts-

They advise companies regarding how to diversify their investments and portfolios in order to prevent potential losses.

Rating analysts-

They deal with debts and decide whether government agencies, businesses or any other organisations can pay back loans.

The key responsibilities of investment banking analysts:

An investment banking analyst performs the following tasks-


  • Combs through the investment portfolios of individuals or companies. The research and analysis should be extensive to offer ideas and solutions for the enhancements and diversifications of the portfolios.
  • They monitor the financial news by using special media sources
  • They keep a close eye on the financial sector of an organisation. They are also responsible for valuation analysis which makes use of methodology such as financial ratios
  • They are the link between investment bankers, clients and attorneys. They analyse the required data to help a company provide their prospective or existing clients with the necessary advice relating to any business transaction
  • Use Power Point presentation to compile pitch books to assist in securing deals with the potential clients. They incorporate comprehensive analysis of investment options and proposals for the clients
  • Participate in marketing events for the company and prepare marketing strategies
  • They communicate with the management of the companies and their investor relations team on a regular basis via telephone
  • Research price, distribution and other transactions and advice company to improve their revenue
  • They keep themselves up-to-date with the new investment products, market developments, and movement in the economies of the relevant countries and in all those areas which affect markets
  • Analyse company’s account, cash flow information and profit and loss sheets
  • Write financial research summaries
  • Research and structure transactions and price and distribute securities
  • Conduct due diligence investigations of client companies

Qualification requires becoming an investment banking analyst:

The following basic qualification is required for an investment banking analyst –

Degree in management, business studies, mathematics, accounting, statistics, finance or economics is always given priorities. A Master degree in business administration is an additional boon. Relevant voluntary or paid experience gained through placements, job shadowing or vacation work can be quite beneficial.

Skills required for investment banking analyst:

The most important skills required for an investment banking analyst are-

Basic understanding of corporate finance which includes-

  • Understanding different types of debts and equity securities
  • Understanding valuation which includes discounted cash flow, return analysis or analysis and interpretation
  • Basic understanding of excel financial modelling including capital structure modelling or income statement forecasting and multiple scenario analysis.
