Is a Rental Property in Mexico the Right Choice for You

You may love a place on your first visit – many people come to Mexico and fall in love with its natural splendor, friendly people and laid-back charm.  However, it is one thing to adore a place and quite another to live there forever! Before you make this decision, you need to get a taste of regular life here.

If you have a family or a job in Mexico, you may opt to buy a house or a piece of land to build on it. However, if you are yet to decide whether this is the place you want to live for a considerable period, you may find a rental property to be a better option. It is not a good idea to make any hasty decision that you may regret later.

Before you talk to a real estate firm, you need to have a clear idea about the advantages of your decision to rent a property. You also need to know about the shortcomings of this choice to make an informed decision.

Advantages of Rental Properties

You get the opportunity to try first and make a decision later. One may love to live in a quiet Mexican village, while another may like to live in a colorful Mexican city. You never know which type of life would suit you unless you experience it. When you rent a place, you have the opportunity to know whether you want to stay near the sea or on the hillside.

You have the flexibility to make any decision. Whether you want condos, villas or apartments for rent in Tulum or Ticul, you can find suitable properties on weekly, monthly or even annual leases. You need not buy a property to stay here in Mexico. Moreover, if your lease permits, you can always sublet it and travel to other places.

You need not invest a large sum for a rental property. You may have to pay a month’s rent and a deposit to rent a place. You may have to pay for the utilities as well. However, this is much lower than what you need to invest when you buy a property. The rental prices may vary from $300 to $3,000, based on the location and features of the property.

Shortcomings of Rental Properties

You do not have the authority to make any changes to the property. Almost all the rental apartments, villas, condos and other residential units are furnished. Even if something in the home does not correspond to your taste, you cannot make any changes. This may be a problem if you are in Mexico during the high season (November-April and July-August).

You may not have a cooperative management company or a landlord. In such a circumstance, you may find it difficult to work with them. It is best to seek help from a competent real estate agency to find villas, condos or apartments for rent in Isla Mujeres or Cozumel. It is also helpful if you can talk to previous clients.

A decision to move to Mexico must be based on sound reason; this makes it best to rent a place and live in it for some time before you decide to buy a property in the same neighborhood. This gives you a taste of how things work here and whether it works for you.

While a rental property may make sense if you are yet to decide whether to move to Mexico or make a second home here, there are no hard and fast rules to do this. If you have fallen in love with the place on your first visit, and want to live here, forever or for a considerable period, you may go ahead and buy a property instead.
