How To Achieve Financial Success In The 21st Century
>> Friday, May 18, 2012

In times gone by there was a pretty simple
formula for life that if followed diligently would give you a pretty good shot
at a timely retirement with enough money to enjoy yourself a little and maybe
do some travelling if you were lucky.
Ok, so it was never ideal, but at least it
was simple. Unfortunately now a days it doesn’t always go that way. Pensions
and stock investments don’t exactly look as secure as they used to right now
and the official retirement age seems to edge up constantly.
Fortunately, if you are proactive, a
simple, financially successful life can still be had, and with a little work
you can probably retire early too. It just takes some forethought:
Learn
To Use Credit Correctly
Property is pretty expensive in the western
world, and like it or not, buying a house out right just isn’t realistic for
most people. This means that you will have to spend most of your working life
in debt.
So now is the time to learn how to use
credit – take the time to borrow small amounts and re-pay them consistently,
always avoid expensive debt and keep a close eye on your debts at all times.
Leverage debt to take advantage of
opportunities is fine, but abusing your credit will harm your credit rating and
make it more difficult and expensive to borrow when you do need it. It is
amazing how much a small blip in your credit file can hurt you, so learning to
keep on top of it is a must.
Save
For A House Now
Whether you have a house or not – unless
you are mortgage free you should constantly be saving so that you can
periodically pay off lump sums. Try to do so in a way that doesn’t incur you
any charges so that you can keep your payments cheap.
If you don’t have a house you should be
saving for that critical deposit, if you do, save to pay down the principal.
If it seems like you don’t really have the
money to spare right now, do a budget and try harder – the simple truth is that
there is never a perfect time to save; but now is always the best time to
start.
Budget
And Re-Budget
Unless you’re already rich, budgeting is an
essential step to financial security. You can’t make best use of your money if
you don’t really know what you’ve got. Writing a budget helps you to understand
where your money is going.
More importantly it is a helpful tool that
will allow you to find where you are spending unnecessarily, you can then plug
those holes and use your money more efficiently.
Write a budget at least 4 times a year so
that you always have an upto date picture of your finances. Save past budgets
and you can compare them to see how your spending has changed.
Laziness
Is Bad
The biggest barrier to your success is
sometimes you. Make sure you keep creating and reinforcing good habits and
don’t let bad habits creep in. Make the effort to keep on top of your finances
and you have won half the battle already.
