Tax Gross-Up - Knowing the Terms of Calculation

Tax planning forms an integral part in the financial planning for every business house and professionals. Business organizations dealing with relocation expenses need to take special care of the planning and management concerning to taxation policies. Assuming that you need to reimburse an employee with relocation expenses or you wish to pay someone a bonus based on the payments received after tax deductions, calculating the tax gross-up in such situations helps you to find out the exact amount to be paid. This particular calculation calculates the gross amount that needs to be paid for figuring the check amount after the tax deductions.

In simple terms, an employee or the organization always needs to give taxes on the reimbursements that is received or offered for relocation expenditure. The tax gross-up refers to the amount, which the employer or employee needs to provide alongside the definite expenses sustained to cover up the taxes. Here, is a look at the methods that would allow you to calculate the amount on your own –

·        Always use a comparable transaction for calculating the tax rate. If you are wishing a calculation for sales transaction, divide the tax charged by the final cost, which must be equal to the amount that you wish to gross-up. However, for payroll taxes like bonus, always remember to calculate the tax based on the rate for all taxes that is applicable to the employee’s check amount.
·        Now, subtract the tax rate that is calculated previously. In case, you are depending upon a contractual rate, always convert the amount into decimal correspondent before moving on with the calculation.
·        Following the calculation, divide the amount you want to gross up by the amount calculated in the previous step. After the employee is paid following the tax deductions, his or her check will be little less of the target amount.

Tax Gross-up calculates the exact amount to be paid for the expenses after tax deductions and any mistake on the side can bring down negative affects for your company ruining its name.
