Why You Should Invest in Gold

>> Wednesday, March 16, 2011

No other precious metal has the kind of storied history that gold does as a commodity of value. Throughout the turmoil of world markets fluctuating and economies changing through history, it has remained a popular precious metal. It is beautiful, sought after, and soft enough to be worked in a number of ways. That combination of factors creates a great opportunity for investors to supplement their portfolio with coin, bullion, or infrastructure investments.

A variety of options are available for investment. Some may want to make a smaller investment by keeping some coins in a safe location. Others may find it better to invest in bars of bullion from afar. Those that do not necessarily want to invest in gold itself may find a better option in the infrastructure surrounding coins and bullion, such as holding or mining companies. They can serve as a great corporate investment in an industry that certainly has staying power.

Gold is a relatively stable commodity in a world market that is in some turmoil at the moment. Recent events have dealt the economy of Japan a harsh blow, the financial markets of the United States are slowly recovering, and various European countries are struggling to stay afloat. No matter where one looks in the world, they will find some turmoil surrounding the economy and their respective currency.

A precious metal has the benefit of actually being worth what it is. Bullion or coins are valuable no matter what market one tries to sell it in. The currencies of today are largely valued on how much the world and investors feel it is currently worth. Currency is no longer backed by physical commodities to give it value. That makes currencies far more susceptible to fluctuation than actual physical goods. Worse yet, currencies can value or devalue based off of fears rather than actual circumstances.

Bullion or coins as an investment gives a greater stability to an investment portfolio. It can be thought of much as the foundation of a building. It provides rock solid support that is not likely to go anywhere. Appreciation and deprecation do occur regularly. One rarely sees a depreciation in value last for an exceptionally long time. It is still a highly sought after precious metal and commodity that is valued the world over.

We are not suggesting that anyone should invest everything into a single interest. That is a surefire recipe for disaster. Instead, let bullion or coins provide a safety net or the foundation from which to build the rest of a portfolio. It is not a commodity that is going to disappear or devalue any time soon if the past several thousand years are any indication.
